Basic Teaching

The basic teaching of the Order consists of the Buddha's teaching of the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, and the Precepts. There are many variations in the translations. We do not quibble about the wording.

There are different forms of the precepts. The form we have adopted is the following:

  • Do not kill sentient beings.
  • Do not steal.
  • Avoid sexual misconduct.
  • Do not lie in word or deed.
  • Do not take intoxicants.

The precepts are not commandments. They are simply ways to avoid harm and the consequences of harm.

Those who wish to join us in membership, except for the associate form, are expected to adhere to the Precepts as principles they seriously attempt to implement in their lives. While perfection is not expected, serious, diligent effort is.
